Who doesn’t love the beach? I’m most active with my camera when i’m on my travels and sometimes, just sometimes, that leads to a beach. This is a collection dedicated to those special places where the land meets the sea.
Costa Rica, with it’s established ex-pat community and thriving tourism industry felt like a step back into the comfort of western culture. English was more broadly spoken and whilst it didn’t feel as authentically Latin as some of the other countries, it did bring with it a chance to completely unwind.
Playa Avellanas became our base for a few days and we spent evening after evening watching the sun set over perfect sandy beaches and as the sun faded from the sky, surfers reluctantly returned to land as silhouettes walking across a canvas.

If i were pushed to pick one favorite spot from all of our motorcycle tour from Chile to Mexico. And i would have to be under considerable pressure to do so… This may well be it.
Ironically, we hadn’t even collected the motorcycle at this point. We were driving a hire car from Puerto Montt up to Santiago and taking in a few stops along the way.
We pulled into Buchupureo and instantly warmed to its small surf town vibes. Our accommodation was just a simple wooden construction but had everything we needed and just a short walk away from this beach.
Regarded as a popular surf destination, there was clearly a community of surfers here but it was far from crowded.
We watched as the skies mellowed into golden yellows and then deep oranges, pinks and reds, the spray turning each shade to pastel as it peeled back from wave after wave.

Taken as the sun set at my favorite destination in Chile, Buchupureo.
The surfers here are committed to say the least, walking out over black rock as the waves threaten and crash around them.

HERMIT 3 is a limited edition photographic print that forms part of the hermit crab trilogy.
All were taken at the Manual Antonio national park in Costa Rica during a 5 month motorcycle adventure starting in Santiago, Chile and ending (unexpectedly) at the Guatemala / Mexico border.
These curious little creatures with their peek-a-boo quirks had us absolutely smitten. We watched on as hundreds of the go about their daily business.

Playa Avellanas, Costa Rica, is the best kind of groundhog day in which to be stuck.
The precision perfection with which the sunset was able to repeat itself was astounding. We were lucky enough to spend a few nights here but i suspect one would never tire from this view.
We also gave our best efforts in consistency by sitting with a pina colada to watch as the sun fizzled into the sea.

If Buchupureo was my favorite place in South America then La Ladera has to be my favourite place in Buchupureo.
Not wanting to tear ourselves away from the beach and the incredible show that was unfolding before us, we knew we had to eat and thought that hitting a restaurant earlier would mean we could get back for the finale…
La Ladera was a pizza place a few streets back from the beach and whilst the food was incredible, the people and the atmosphere made it so special. We watched as local after local walked in only to be greeted warmly by the owner and then it seemed, everyone else in the place. Kids were brought in to be left to roam free. It was like being at an Italian family meal but where the whole community joined.
It made me long to belong to such a community and show me what humanity at its best looked like. No screens, no formalities. Just love and laughter.
This is, in part, is what made this little dot on the map leave such a huge imprint on my heart.
Beautiful in every sense.
I often dream of a life here.

“FREEDOM” Was taken from an elevated natural plateau on a privately accessed section of the Irish, Kerry coastline.

We’d had a roller coaster of a ride through Peru. Lake Titikaka, Cusco and the rainforest was incredible but we’d had to divert to the coast road and the pan american highway which entailed several long days on highways. Large sections of the road were littered on either side.
Spirits were once again lifted as we arrived into Huanchaco. The town had a large surf community and the most incredible sunsets. Not to mention all the fresh ceviche!
