They would fly in formation, sometimes just inches from the waters surface or, on this occasion, overhead. They fly in these choreographed patterns to save energy over long distances. When the front bird flaps its wings, it pushes air down and creates a rising swirl of air called an upwash—off its wingtips. Birds flying directly behind and to the side then catch this rising air, which gives them free lift and helps them stay in the air with less effort.
