San Pedro de Atacama, where we were staying for this visit, sits at the edge of the world's driest desert, a small oasis town surrounded by salt flats, volcanoes, and otherworldly stark terrain.
Nearby, the salars—vast, cracked expanses of white salt crust—host an unexpected flash of color in their shallow, mineral-rich lagoons: flamingos. Three species, including the rare James's flamingo, wade through the brine, feeding on algae and tiny crustaceans that thrive in the harsh, high-altitude water.
Their pink plumage stands in striking contrast to the white salt and deep blue volcanic backdrop, making the salars of the Atacama, like Laguna Chaxa, a surreal meeting point of desert extremity and fragile, thriving life.
