We’d been looking forward to our excursion to the Amazon Rainforest since before the trip began. It was a holiday within a holiday.
We’d left the motorcycle in Cusco and flown a short flight out to Puerto Maldonado where we would pick up a transfer across town, experience our first proper downpour in weeks and then zip along the Rio Madre de Dios to what we would call home for a few nights.
Whilst we were fully expecting a top shelf wildlife show, we hadn’t anticipated waking up on our first morning to the demonic sounds of these Howler Monkeys.
Their deep guttural roars boom through the treetops and instil the most primal of fears. Only once we’d realised the origin of the sound, did we begin to appreciate their magnificense.
This “tribe” moved silently, aside from their calls, through the treetops occasionally glancing down to see us staring back up.
