I had never imagined such an alien scene. We’d set off that morning with some trepidation as the day’s itinerary involved traversing the Paso de Jama, a snaking ribbon of tarmac that takes you from the Atacama desert in Chile into northern Argentina. At points, reaching an altitude of 4,800m above sea level.
Pacana Caldera is a salar (salt lake) at altitude on the Chilean side of the border and a wondrous stop off to warm up (temperatures read -7 degrees centigrade at points) and marvel at the spectacle.
