Well. Where do I start with this one.
Volcán de Fuego, an active Guatemalan stratovolcano near Antigua and a hugely popular attraction in the region.
We arrived on New Year’s Day 2026 and decided that it would be a nice way to see in the new year but also that the likelihood was the routes would be quieter.
A walk through Antigua, a bus ride to the start of the trail, a stop for a briefing, collect a few bits of kit and we were kicking off what would be a five-hour hike — a relentless uphill all the way kind of hike. It’s OK though. We have a reasonable level of fitness and the promise of such a spectacle kept us motivated.
We pushed on until we got to our base camp. There was nothing to see. Thick cloud pushed through the valley like fluffy white wildebeast at a bottleneck, but the muffled rumble it concealed sent shivers across our dewy skin.
As the sun fell, the cloud began to clear and we got our first glimpse of the magnificent conical wonder.
She erupted every 15 or 20 minutes late into the evening, with dust clouds turning to fireworks of lava.
No words I write or picture I could take would do it justice. It is, unequivocally, the most wondrous thing I have seen in my life. I stayed planted in awe of the power and beauty. Humbled.
This picture was taken the morning after, just as the sun began to tint everything golden.
